Superlative forms

The formula am -sten is used to say that an activity or noun possesses most of a particular quality. Often, an Umlaut is added to the adjective. Example sentences:

  • Die Clowns waren am lustigsten. (The clowns were funniest.)
  • Die Szene mit dem verletzten kleinen Kind war am traurigsten. (The scene with the injured little kid was saddest.)
  • Er läuft am schnellsten. (He runs fastest.)
  • Am schlimmsten sind Montage. (Mondays are worst.)

Important irregular superlative forms are gut, am besten (good, best), viel, am meisten (much, most), hoch, am höchsten (high, highest), gern, am liebsten (gladly, most gladly). Example sentences:

  • Dieser Film ist am besten. (This film is best.)
  • Sie wissen am meisten über dieses Thema. (You know most about this topic.)
  • Sie mag Katzen am liebsten. (She likes cats best.)

 

Comparative and superlative forms that precede nouns:

When a comparative or superlative form precedes a noun and/or is preceded by an article, it takes the same adjective endings as other adjectives: Examples:

  • Das ist ein besserer Vorschlag. (That is a better suggestion.)
  • Sie fährt jetzt ein kleineres Auto. (She drives a smaller car now.)
  • Sie reisten bei schönstem Wetter. (They traveled in the most beautiful weather.)
  • Wir benutzen nur die besten Zutaten. (We only use the best ingredients.)
  • Unsere Jüngste ist in der achten Klasse. (Our youngest [daughter] is in eighth grade.)
  • Studiert Ihr Ältester? (Does your oldest [son] study?).
