The impersonal pronouns es and das
In many cases, the impersonal pronous es and das are used much like it and this/these are used in English. Example sentences:
- Das ist mein Auto. (That's my car.)
- Es ist drei Uhr. (It's three o'clock.)
- Es ist kalt. (It's cold.)
- Das sind meine Eltern. (Those are my parents.)
- Du bist es. (It's you.)
There are several additional uses of the impersonal pronouns es and das in German: Examples:
- Es gibt hier einen Flughafen. (There is ["It gives"] an airport here.)
- Es gibt immer mehr Menschen auf der Erde. (There are ["It gives"] more and more people on earth.)
- Sie ist traurig, und er ist es auch. (She is sad, and so is he)
- Ich weiß es nicht. (I don't know [it].)
- Es wurde darüber geschrieben. (It's been written about.)
- Es wurde gesungen und getanzt. (There was singing and dancing [It was sung and danced]).
- Es wird jetzt geschlafen! (Sleep now! [It will be slept now].)
