Future Tense
Usually, the future tense is expressed by using a present tense construction and adding a time phrase, if necessary. Examples:
- Heute Nachmittag spielen wir Tennis. (We will play tennis this afternoon).
- Ich komme um neun Uhr an. (I'll get there at nine o'clock).
- Wir bleiben in Kontakt. (We'll stay in touch.)
- Morgen früh schlafe ich aus (Tomorrow morning I'll sleep in.)
In order to emphasize that a planned activity will be done, the werde+infinitive construction is used. Examples:
- Heute Nachmittag werden wir Tennis spielen. (We will [definitely] play tennis this afternoon.
- Ich werde um neun Uhr ankommen. (I'll get there at nine o'clock.)
- Wir werden in Kontakt bleiben. (We'll stay in touch).
- Morgen früh werde ich ausschlafen. (Tomorrow morning I'll sleep in.)
The werde+infinitive construction is also used to voice speculations about the present. Examples:
- Er wird froh sein, dass du wieder da bist. (He will be happy that you are back).
- Du wirst doch nicht schon wieder krank sein! (You are not sick again, are you!).
