The accusative case:
The accusative case indicates a direct object. Example sentences:
- Wir sehen einen Film. (We are watching a movie.)
- Ich liebe dich. (I love you.)
- Sie spielen Karten. (They are playing cards.)
The accusative case is also used for time expressions
- Wir gehen jeden Tag schwimmen. (We go swimming every day.)
- Letzten Dienstag hatte sie Geburtstag. (Last Tuesday was her birthday.)
- Diese Woche habe ich viel zu tun. (I am very busy this week.)
Accusative prepositions:
The accusative case also goes with specific prepositions. The most important accusative prepositions are: durch, für, gegen, ohne, bis, and um. Example sentences:
- Sie gehen durch den Wald. (They walk through the forest. / They are walking through the forest.)
- Ich kann dich durch das Fenster sehen. (I can see you through the window.)
- Ich mache das für dich.(I am doing that for you.)
- Er ist für Steuererhöhungen. (He is for increased taxes.)
- Sie ist gegen Steuererhöhungen. (She is against increased taxes.)
- Er fährt ohne seinen Hund. (He is going without his dog.)
- Wir sitzen um den Tisch. (We sit around the table. / We are sitting around the table)
- Sie bleibt bis August. (She is staying until August.)
